The Green Economy
The green economy is a strategic productive sector that has turned Apulia into one of the most virtuous regions in Italy. Thanks to policies for economic development that take environmental issues into account and local legislation that is amongst the most innovative in the country, Apulia is, in fact, the leading region in the production of clean energy, holding first place in the production of wind and photo-voltaic energy and third in bio-energies. Apulia is also out in front when it comes to the recuperation of contaminated sites, as well as the safeguarding and monitoring of its coastline and seas and in eco building. Protecting the countryside and the environment in fact, is also part of sustainable urban planning. Apulian construction companies are incentivised to build structures that are increasingly energy efficient and they now continue to have a progressively lesser impact on the landscape, achieved in part through the use of natural materials of local origin.
But Apulia’s green economy is not just an important economic sector, it is also the ethos practiced by its productive sectors. All the region’s businesses in fact are called upon to play an active role in safeguarding the territory and to work at reducing pollutants, as well as to develop and adopt technologies that have a low impact on the environment. The regional government, in collaboration with all the productive clusters, is intent on boosting growth in the green economy and disseminating environmental sustainability – even beyond its borders – by providing incentives to share knowledge and technologies abroad. This not only helps businesses in their internationalisation process, it also creates a tool with which to disseminate “good practices” and environmental issues, making Apulia a “hot spot” in the international green economy arena too.
Encouraging the self-production of energy as well as the production of clean energy generally, and supporting research into new technologies that will produce energy that has a minimal impact on the environment, are just some of the challenges that the regional government has set itself as part of developing an industrial network that not only respects the territory, but also the health of those who live in it.
Apulian Renewable Energies Business Cluster And Energetic Efficiency “La Nuova Energia”
“La Nuova Energia” business cluster was formed to support growth in the sector of energy production from renewable sources. The top aims are the development of research, technological innovation and education; the promotion of certification for energy efficiency, and finally the modernisation of distribution-related infrastructure. The cluster also works for the development of a regional production system specialized in energy-generation plants and components. The cluster includes: 330 companies, 9 universities and research centres, 22 local agencies, public associations, related union associations, 10 private associations, foundations, consortiums.
DESPUGLIA Apulian Sustainable Construction Business Cluster
The Apulian Sustainable Construction Business Cluster was formed to develop sustainable construction in Apulia and to promote the quality of the production in the market. The strategic aims are to strengthen the relationship between firms and public agencies; to stimulate engineering quality with reduction of impact; and finally to promote technological research and innovation. The cluster also operates to broaden the market, targeting products and services with higher value added. Finally, it favors the birth of new professional profiles who are qualified to understand and diffuse sustainability in construction and urban development. The cluster includes: 165 companies, 10 research centres and universities, 11 training schools, 24 agencies, associations, professional orders and financial credit institutions.
Apulian environmental and reuse business cluster (DIPAR)
The Apulian Environmental and Reuse Business Cluster aims to favor industrial research and technological innovation in production processes, with the objective of reducing waste generation and the use of polluting agents in the production stage. DIPAR targets constant growth of environmental awareness in the working world, through formation of specialised human resources that can operate in firms and in public administration. A further objective is to favor internationalization of the firms, including support for technological transfer from Apulian firms to the developing nations, thus spreading best practices and technologies for safeguarding the environment. The District includes: 198 companies, 6 universities and research centres, 6 local agencies, public associations, chamber of commerce, 18 related professional and union associations, 10 private associations, foundations, consortia.
National energy technology cluster (Di.T.N.E)
Since formation, Di.T.N.E. has had three strategic aims: support for research in the energy field; favoring technology transfer between national and international actors; finally, bridging research, enterprise, credit agencies and the territory. The choice of the city of Brindisi as the headquarters of the national district was a new recognition of the Apulia’s leading role in the field of research and technological development, in this case for the production of renewable energy.
For the Apulian territory in particular, the national district works towards development of sustainable industry, including applications of new technologies, in cooperation with other regional Technological District. The cluster includes 19 companies, 14 research centres and universities, 1 technological district.
